NHS access and private provider prices are not two versions of the same retail offer. One is a clinically eligible, commissioned NHS pathway; the other is a private prescription service with provider-specific charges and conditions.

The short answer
In England, an NHS patient who pays prescription charges currently pays the standard NHS prescription charge per prescribed item, not the provider prices shown in PharmacyScore's private comparison. Some people qualify for free NHS prescriptions. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different prescription-charge arrangements.
Private prices are set by individual services and may reflect the medicine plus some combination of consultation, prescribing, dispensing, delivery or ongoing support. Eligibility still requires an individual clinical assessment.
NHS access is based on clinical and commissioning criteria
NHS England says access for weight management is phased and initially prioritised toward people with the highest clinical need. Meeting a broad NICE criterion does not by itself guarantee immediate local access or a prescription.

What “NHS price” means to a patient in England
The NHS Business Services Authority currently states that the England prescription charge is £9.90 for each prescribed item, while eligible groups receive free prescriptions. That patient charge is not the acquisition or reimbursement cost paid within the NHS.

How to read a private price comparison
- Compare the exact dose your prescriber has authorised.
- Check whether the captured amount is standard, starting or programme pricing.
- Open the provider source and confirm delivery, consultation, support and commitment terms.
- Check the evidence date and do not assume stock or clinical eligibility.
- Do not start, stop or change a dose because of price information.
